Reflections on Learning from Different Cultures

Writer: Theresa WilsonTheresa Wilson

Books, food, and travel—whether experienced physically or through the comfort of home—have been my gateway to discovering the richness of different cultures. Each of these passions has given me a window into the traditions, values, and histories of places I may never have otherwise encountered. Through books, I’ve explored worlds far beyond my own, immersing myself in the customs, struggles, and triumphs of people from different backgrounds. Cooking has allowed me to connect with these cultures on a sensory level, experiencing the flavors and techniques that define them. While I have yet to travel beyond my own country, these experiences have provided a bridge to places I long to visit, making me feel connected to a world that is vast and diverse. These passions have not only expanded my understanding but have also reshaped my perspective, teaching me to approach cultural differences with curiosity, respect, and appreciation.

Books: The First Passport

Stories have always been my first introduction to different cultures. Through books, I’ve wandered the streets of Paris with Hemingway, stepped into the misty highlands of Scotland and the historic streets of the UK in historical romances.  Some books have introduced me to cultural traditions I hadn’t known before, while others have challenged my own perceptions, making me question assumptions and broaden my understanding of the world.

Many stories have highlighted the richness of different traditions, bringing them to life in ways that make them feel tangible. I’ve learned about cultural festivals, family customs, and historical events that shaped entire nations—all through the lens of storytelling. Books that explore immigrant experiences have given me insight into the challenges and triumphs of navigating two cultures at once, deepening my appreciation for resilience and adaptation. Literature doesn’t just describe a place—it immerses us in its essence, allowing us to feel what it might be like to live there, to walk its streets, and to be part of its story.

Food: A Taste of Culture

Cooking has been another way I’ve immersed myself in different cultures. Whenever I come across a dish in a book or discover a recipe from another part of the world, I feel inspired to bring it to life in my own kitchen. Italian cuisine has been particularly meaningful to me, from making homemade pasta to attempting my own tiramisu as a way of connecting with my heritage. Beyond Italy, I’ve also experimented with dishes like paella, ramen, and scones, each one offering a small but meaningful glimpse into another culture’s culinary traditions.

Food carries stories, history, and identity. Learning to cook a dish from another culture is more than just following a recipe—it’s engaging with tradition. Every ingredient and technique tells a story, reflecting the history and geography of the people who created it. I love learning about the significance of certain dishes, like how paella originated as a communal meal in Spain, how ramen evolved from a simple dish to a beloved comfort food in Japan, or how scones became a staple of British tea culture. Cooking these meals has allowed me to connect, even in a small way, to the traditions that have shaped them.

Beyond the ingredients, the process itself often carries cultural meaning. The way food is shared, prepared, and even eaten varies widely across the world. Some meals are meant to be enjoyed slowly, emphasizing togetherness and conversation, while others are designed for practicality and efficiency. Even though I may not have physically traveled to these places, cooking their food has given me a small piece of their world—a connection to traditions that have been passed down for generations.

Travel: The Dream of Exploration

Although I have yet to embark on international travels, my passion for experiencing different cultures remains strong. I know that when I do visit places like Italy, Scotland, or Germany, I will already have a foundation of understanding from the books I’ve read and the meals I’ve prepared. Travel, whether near or far, offers an opportunity to learn directly from people, to see history come alive, and to experience the rhythms of daily life in a way that no book or dish alone can fully capture.

Even without boarding a plane, I’ve found that cultural experiences can be discovered close to home—whether it’s through local festivals, restaurants, or museums. Finding ways to engage with different cultures, even in small ways, keeps my curiosity alive and continues to shape my understanding of the world.

How These Passions Have Shaped My Perspective

Books, food, and travel have taught me that culture is not just about geography—it’s about stories, traditions, and shared experiences. They have shown me the importance of approaching different ways of life with an open mind and a willingness to learn. I’ve come to appreciate that while cultures may differ in language, customs, or beliefs, there is always a common thread of human connection. Exploring different cultures has helped me see the beauty in both the familiar and the unfamiliar, reminding me that our differences can be a source of connection rather than division. It has made me more curious, more appreciative, and more eager to continue learning.

Through these experiences, I’ve learned that embracing other cultures is not about consuming them for personal enjoyment but about respecting their history and significance. It’s about listening, learning, and recognizing the value of traditions that may be different from my own. The more I explore, the more I realize that understanding another culture is an ongoing journey—one that requires humility and a willingness to challenge my own perspectives. And while I still have so much more to discover, I take comfort in knowing that every book I read, every dish I cook, and every place I dream of visiting brings me one step closer to a more enriched and understanding view of the world.

How have you learned from different cultures? Whether through books, food, or travel, I’d love to hear how these experiences have shaped your perspective! Have you ever read a book that introduced you to a new tradition, tried cooking a dish that gave you insight into another way of life, or traveled somewhere that changed how you see the world? Share your experiences—I’d love to learn from them!
